About DDS
DirectDraw Surface
Microsoft's DirectX texture container. It usually stores GPU-compressed data (the DXT or BCn formats) with mipmaps, so a graphics card can load it without decoding. Convert to DDS for game textures and mods; convert from it to view or edit a texture.
About GIF
Graphics Interchange Format
CompuServe's 1987 format, limited to a palette of 256 colors per frame and compressed losslessly with LZW. It supports simple animation and on-or-off transparency. Use it for short looping animations where broad support matters more than color depth.
