About JPG
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
A lossy image format standardized in 1992 that shrinks photos by discarding detail the eye is less likely to notice. It has no transparency, and each re-save loses a little more quality. Use it for photos you want to share or upload, since nearly every device, browser and app opens it.
About AVIF
AV1 Image File Format
An image format from the Alliance for Open Media, finalized in 2019, that stores AV1-compressed images in a HEIF container. It supports lossy and lossless compression, alpha and HDR, and its files are often smaller than WebP. Use it for web images when you want the smallest files; current Chrome, Firefox and Safari all display it.
