About FITS
Flexible Image Transport System
The standard data format in astronomy since 1981, storing images and tables behind plain-text headers that record telescope and observation details. Convert from FITS to get a viewable PNG or JPG of telescope data; convert to it for astronomy software.
About BMP
Windows Bitmap
Microsoft's bitmap format, which usually stores pixels uncompressed, so files are large for their dimensions. Almost every Windows program can read it. Convert to BMP when an older Windows tool or embedded device only accepts it; convert away from it to save space.
